Ripple Stitch

Sample knit with Patons Silk Bamboo on US 7 needles

I've decided to post an additional stitch for this week, since "A Pretty Stitch" is a duplicate :0)  Also, this stitch was used in one of the scarves I showed you in my How to Knit a Scarf video, and someone had asked about the pattern.  There is no pattern for the scarf itself, I made it up and didn't bother to write it down.  I just added a simple garter/yarn over border to the Ripple Stitch pattern to make the scarf.

Work on a multiple of 5 stitches, plus 2

Pattern Note:  All slipped stitches are to be slipped purl-wise, with the yarn held in the front of the work (wyif)

Row 1: K1, *P1, Sl2 wyif, P2tog, YO*, K last stitch
Row 2 and all even numbered Rows: Purl all stitches
Row 3: K1, *Sl2, P2tog, YO, P1*, Knit last stitch
Row 5: K1, Sl1, *P2tog, YO, P1, Sl2*, end last repeat with Sl1, and Knit last stitch
Row 7: K1, *P2tog, YO, P1, Sl2*, Knit last stitch
Row 9: K1, P2, *Sl2, P2tog, YO, P1*, end last repeat with Sl2, P1, and Knit last stitch

Repeat these 10 Rows for pattern.

And here is the video.  Enjoy!

  1. How did you make the garter stitch border? I've done a regular knit stitch as borders but yours looks different. It looks so delicate with this ripple stitch that I plan to use. Thanks and I really enjoy this site.

  2. I don't remember exactly how I did the border on the scarf, as I did not write down the pattern. I do not have the scarf out to look at, but looking at it in the video, I probably knit two, knit two together, made a yarn over and then began the ripple stitch pattern.

  3. I have two questions when you make a border you do your border stitch then start the pattern and how did you do your whole border

When I add stitches for a border, I usually knit a few rows at the bottom in whatever I choose - garter or seed stitch for example , then when it looks how I want it to look, I begin the stitch pattern. For the side borders, I do a few stitches in the same stitch I used at the bottom. There is no rule as to how wide the border is, whatever you want it to look like. I usually do about 4 stitches or so extra on each side. Then before binding off I do the same number of rows at the top as I did on the bottom.

  5. Hi! So it's 2 years later and I finally did this stitch (thank you!)... I have browsed all of your other links and can't seem to find the pattern for one I did in 2011; I am assuming I found it here on your site but can't find it. I have a picture... would you be able to identify it based off of that? :/
