Double Stockinette

Sample knit with worsted weight yarn on US 10 needles

Multiple of 2

Setup: k1, sl 1 wyif

All subsequent rows: knit the slipped stitches from previous row, slip the knit stitches wyif

This is a handy technique for making a reversible, cushy fabric that has stockinette on both sides, along with a neat and tidy edge.  Use this technique to make a seamless, cozy scarf, or a potholder/hotpad.

I think the best way to bind off is in pattern (shown in the video); if you just knit all stitches for the bind off, the stitches become elongated and look funny in comparison to the rest of the fabric.  Binding off in pattern will create a seamless end to the fabric.  Do knit the last stitch rather than slipping it so that you can pull the tail through to weave in the end.

Gull Wing Lace Panel

Sample knit with Merino Dream Fingering on US 6 needles

7 stitch panel

Row 2: k1, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, ssk, k1
Row 3: purl
Row 4: k2tog, yo, k3, yo, ssk

Repeat these 4 rows for panel pattern

My sample has 2 reverse stockinette stitches between the panels; you can space the panels as wide or narrow as you like, and you can also use garter stitch, stockinette, seed stitch or even a cable between the panels.  Depending on how you are using the panel, you may want to add one or more stitches to the beginning/end of the row to neaten things up.

Cluster Stitch

Sample knit with worsted weight wool on US 8 needles
You can vary the look of the clusters by wrapping more times for larger clusters, and fewer times for smaller clusters.  You can also wrap the yarn tightly or loose to change the look of the clusters.

To make clusters: k3, slip those 3 sts from right needle onto a cable or DPN (should be same size as needle used in project or smaller - a larger DPN can stretch your stitches); wrap working yarn counterclockwise around stitches six times, then slip those three stitches back to right needle.

Row 1 and all WS rows: purl
Row 2: knit
Row 4: k4 *cluster, k3; rep from *, end k1
Row 6: knit
Row 8: k1 *cluster, k3; rep from *, end cluster, k1

Repeat these 8 rows for pattern.

Spring Stitch

Sample knit with my Cushy Worsted on US 8 needles
Multiple of 4

To make springs:  wyib, insert right needle into next stitch as if to knit, wrap yarn around both needles ten times, then pull working yarn through all wraps and the stitch you are working into.  Slip from left needle; take working yarn to the right and pull out wraps. Then, gently pull on working yarn to coil the wraps up next to the needle.  Don't wrap too tightly - and remember, practice makes 'springs'!

Row 1: knit
Row 2: purl
Row 3: knit
Row 4: p1 *spring, k1, p2; rep from * to last 3 sts, make spring, k1, p1
Row 5: knit
Row 6: p3 *spring, k1, p2; rep from * to last 5 sts, make spring, k1, p3

Long Slip Stitch

Sample knit with Silky Merino Heavy Worsted on US 7 needles

Peruvian Lace

Sample knit with worsted weight yarn on US 7 needles

This stitch looks great in any weight or fiber, but I think it would look absolutely fabulous in a slinky, drapey fiber like tencel for a summer stole!  Soybean or silk yarn would also be nice for a summer project.

Depending on how you use this stitch, you may want to add some stitches to the sides to neaten things up.  This would make a great scarf, or border on the bottom of a sweater.  So many possibilities!

If you use this stitch pattern in a project, hop over to my facebook page and share a pic, I'd love to see your work!

Multiple of 4 + 2

Rows 1 and 2: knit
Row 3: k1 *knit, wrapping yarn 3 times before dropping from left needle; repeat from * to last stitch, k1
Row 4: k1 *sl 4, dropping extra wraps; slip these 4 long stitches back to left needle and k1, p1, k1, p1 into all 4 together before dropping from left needle; repeat from * to last stitch, k1
Rows 5, 6, 7, 8: knit
Row 9: knit all stitches, wrapping yarn 3 times before dropping from left needle
Row 10: knit all stitches, dropping extra wraps

Repeat these 10 rows for the pattern.

The edges do curl due to the panels of stocking stitch along the sides, so depending on how you plan to use the stitch, you may want to add a seed or garter stitch border.

Stripes and Bars

Sample knit with fingering weight yarn on US size 6 needles

This stitch looks great on both sides, perfect for a scarf or other project where the back will be seen. It also lays flat, but the edges are sloppy so you may want to add a border depending on how you use the stitch.

Multiple of 3 + 2

Row 1 (RS): p2 *sl 1 wyib, p2
Row 2: k2 * sl 1 wyif, k2

Reversible Grand Eyelets

Sample knit with worsted weight yarn on US Size 8 needles

Cast on a multiple of 4+4

Row 1: p2 *yo, p4tog; rep from *, end p2
Row 2: k2 *k1, (k1, p1, k1) into yo; rep from *, k2
Row 3: knit

Repeat these 3 rows for the pattern.

The edges are not neat, depending on how you plan to use the stitch you may want to add a border to neaten things up.

If you are beginning the pattern right from the cast on row, cast on loosely or work a row of plain knitting (loosely) so that the p4tog in Row 1 is easier to work.  Work Row 3 loosely also to make Row 1 easier.

Cyprus Edging

Top sample knit with silk lace weight; bottom knit with merino wool DK weight - both on US size 7 needles

Row 1: sl, k5, k2tog, yo, k1, k2tog, k1
Row 2: k4, yo, k2tog, k2, yo, k2tog, k1
