Multiple of 6

Row 1 (rs): knit

Row 2: *k5, p1

Row 3: knit

Row 4: *k5, p1

Row 5:  knit

Row 6: *k2, p1, k3

Row 7: knit

Row 8: *k2, p1, k3

Repeat these 8 rows for the pattern.

Multiple of 6

Row 1 (rs): *sl 1 purlwise, k2, psso the 2 knit sts, k3

Row 2: *p4, yo, p1

Row 3: *k3, sl 1 purlwise, k2, psso the 2 knit sts

Row 4: *p1, yo, p4

Repeat these four rows for the pattern.

You may want to add a border, or work this stitch in between other stitch patterns; because of the rows ending/beginning with slipped stitches being passed over, the edges are not even or neat.  Another option is to work the uneven edges in as a design feature, to use as buttonholes perhaps.
